Most famous AI benchmarks no longer separate the best models

The useful benchmarks now test long, expert-built, paid work. Even those often grade badly, and the harness can move a score more than the model.

Key findings

  • Static knowledge and reasoning exams have reached their ceilings. GPQA Diamond tops out at 96.4% (Oct 2026), against an estimated ceiling of 97%.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary
  • Saturation now comes within one or two years of release. ARC-AGI-2 went from 54% to 95% in about nine months, from December 2025 to September 2026.[2][2] ARC-AGI-2 leaderboard data ARC Prize Primary[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary
  • Audits show that many ceilings are fake. In November 2026 Epoch AI rates 13 benchmarks "Flawed", including HLE, SWE-bench Verified, SWE-bench Pro, Terminal-Bench 4.0 and OSWorld 2.1.[3][3] Benchmark Review registry Epoch AI Primary[4][4] HLE benchmark review Epoch AI Primary[5][5] SWE-bench Verified review Epoch AI Primary[6][6] SWE-Bench Pro review Epoch AI Primary[7][7] Terminal-Bench 4.0 review Epoch AI Primary[8][8] OSWorld 2.1 review Epoch AI Primary
  • The new frontier tests long, economically grounded work. On the Remote Labor Index, the best agent automates only 21.25% of paid freelance projects (Sep 2026).[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary
  • The harness can move scores more than the model. GPT-6 Astra scores 62.7% on ARC-AGI-3 with the standard harness and 99.9% with a provider adapter (Sep–Nov 2026).[9][9] GPT-6 Astra on ARC-AGI-3 ARC Prize Primary[10][10] ARC-AGI-3 leaderboard data ARC Prize Primary
  • METR's time horizon, the main long-horizon measure, has hit its own ceiling. METR calls values above 16 hours unreliable and stopped active updates on 8 September 2026.[11][11] Time horizons page METR Primary
  • Labs now headline new agentic benchmarks and drop the old ones. Anthropic's Opus 5.5 launch table (22 Sep 2026) has no SWE-bench, GPQA, MMLU or ARC-AGI row.[12][12] Introducing Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic Vendor
  • Lab tables and independent boards often disagree by 5 to 10 points. Harness, effort level and selective framing explain much of the gap.[12][12] Introducing Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic Vendor[13][13] Terminal-Bench 4.0 Artificial Analysis Primary[14][14] GPT-6 Astra benchmarks explained Vellum Secondary
  • Domain benchmarks in law, finance and health test skill, not lawful conduct. They ask whether the agent does the expert's job well, not whether it obeys the law.[15][15] Benchmark list Vals AI Primary

Benchmarks now age in months, not years

A benchmark is useful while it separates models. It loses that power in two ways: scores reach the ceiling, or an audit shows that the ceiling is fake.

We track saturation with three thresholds. For each benchmark we record when the first model crossed 50%, 75% and 90%. The dates come from Epoch AI's data files, and they use model release dates.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary The story below follows the climb, then the few tests that still resist.

Each New Benchmark Fills Up Faster Than the Last

Best score on each benchmark at the time it was set, 2021 to November 2026.

Step 1 of 5: One line, MMLU, rises from 50% in December 2021 to 75% in March 2023 and 88% by late 2024.

MMLU was the standard knowledge exam. The first model passed 50% in December 2021. The climb to 75% took another 15 months. Labs then stopped reporting it.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary
Later tests filled up faster. GPQA Diamond, a set of PhD-level science questions, went from 50% to 90% in 17 months. It now sits within one point of its estimated ceiling.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary
By 2026, saturation took months. ARC-AGI-2 made the climb from 50% to 90% in seven months, and Cybench in five. FrontierMath Tier 4 v2 reached 100% three months after its release.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary[2][2] ARC-AGI-2 leaderboard data ARC Prize Primary
A few measures still leave room at the top. Each one is newer, longer or more open-ended. The best agent completes only 21% of paid freelance projects. The best model solves 4.4% of open Erdős problems.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary
Some ceilings are fake. Epoch AI rates 13 benchmarks "Flawed": scoring defects could affect at least 20% of the score. HLE and SWE-bench Verified are among them.[3][3] Benchmark Review registry Epoch AI Primary[4][4] HLE benchmark review Epoch AI Primary[5][5] SWE-bench Verified review Epoch AI Primary

The pace has grown fast. MMLU needed about 15 months to climb from 50% to 75%. GPQA Diamond went from 50% to 90% in 17 months. ARC-AGI-2 made the same climb in seven months, and Cybench in five.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary The useful public life of a static benchmark is now one or two model generations.

What to notice

  • GPQA Diamond is the slow outlier at 17 months: the last points near a 97% ceiling come slowly.
  • Every benchmark released in 2024 or later saturated in 8 months or less.

What to notice

  • The final stretch near the ceiling is slow because the test runs out of clear questions.

What still resists

A few measures still leave clear room at the top. Each one is newer, longer or more open-ended than the benchmarks above. The best agent completes 21.25% of the Remote Labor Index's paid freelance projects.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary The best model solves 4.4% of FrontierMath's open Erdős problems. How benchmarks get replaced

Maintainers now ship new versions instead of new names. Each version fixes errors, adds private items or raises difficulty. FrontierMath v2 fixed 123 Tier 1-3 problems and 12 Tier 4 problems.[30][30] FrontierMath Tiers 1-3 v2 Epoch AI Primary Epoch's ceiling estimate for the original FrontierMath set was only 57%.[1][1] Benchmark data bundle Epoch AI Primary So some old ceilings came from label noise, not from model limits.

How we label benchmark status

StatusMeaning
SaturatedTop scores sit at or near the ceiling, so the benchmark no longer ranks frontier models.
Near ceilingTop scores sit within a few points of the ceiling or of human level.
ActiveFrontier models still spread out, and the maintainer still publishes results.
StaleThe leaderboard has no credible 2026 frontier entries, or the maintainer stopped updates.
FlawedEpoch AI's Benchmark Review found defects that could affect at least 20% of the score.[3][3] Benchmark Review registry Epoch AI Primary

Audits show that many benchmark ceilings are fake

A benchmark can also die because its grading breaks. In 2026, independent audits turned that risk into a public verdict.

Epoch AI now audits benchmarks like an inspector audits a building. Its Benchmark Reviews sample up to 50 tasks, and up to 100 for borderline cases.[4][4] HLE benchmark review Epoch AI Primary A benchmark is "Flawed" if defects could affect at least 20% of its score. SWE-bench shows how fast a headline benchmark can fall. OpenAI stopped reporting SWE-bench Verified on 23 February 2026, citing contamination and flawed tests.[50][50] Why we no longer evaluate SWE-bench Verified OpenAI Vendor In its audit, 59.4% of tasks had tests that reject correct fixes.[5][5] SWE-bench Verified review Epoch AI Primary OpenAI then recommended SWE-bench Pro, and retracted that advice in July.[51][51] OpenAI SWE-bench Pro retraction Tech Insider Secondary Its second audit found 27.4% to 34.1% of Pro tasks broken.[42][42] Separating signal from noise in coding evaluations OpenAI Vendor

Contamination now lives in the test environment as well as in training data. The new frontier prices tasks in money and hours

First-generation agent benchmarks are near human level, or their leaderboards went stale in 2025. The 2026 frontier tests long, economically grounded work with partial credit.

METR's time horizon doubled every four months, then hit its own ceiling

METR measures the length of task that an agent can finish. Its "50% time horizon" is the task length, in expert human time, at which the agent succeeds half the time.[11][11] Time horizons page METR Primary

Propensity tests ask what a model does when it can cheat or hide. Apollo Research found in-context scheming in five frontier models in December 2024.[135][135] In-context scheming, arXiv 2412.04984 Apollo Research Primary OpenAI and Apollo later cut o3's covert actions from 13% to 0.4%. They also found that test awareness itself lowers covert behaviour.[136][136] Anti-scheming, arXiv 2509.15541 OpenAI and Apollo Primary A model that spots a test may behave better than it does in real use.

Uplift trials test whether high scores mean real-world danger. In one blinded trial, novices completed a viral genetics workflow 5.2% of the time with LLMs and 6.6% without.[148][148] Wet-lab uplift trial, arXiv 2602.16703 Primary The gap was not significant. Yet UK AISI reports that apprentice-level cyber task success rose from 9% to 50% in two years.[129][129] Frontier AI Trends Report findings UK AISI Primary

Every agent fails some attacks. Agent-security benchmarks measure attack success rate (ASR) against task utility. The ART competition ran 1.8 million attacks on 22 agents. Nearly all agents broke policy within 10 to 100 queries.[155][155] ART benchmark, arXiv 2507.20526 Primary No agent-security benchmark ties its violations to named EU statutes.

What to notice

  • Even the 2026 frontier model in this list loses a third of AgentDojo attacks.
  • Stronger models were often more exposed to MCP tool poisoning.

Labs now headline new agentic benchmarks and drop the old ones

Labs now headline agentic, partly third-party benchmarks. They add caveats on harness, effort level and safeguards.

The old headline benchmarks have left the launch tables. Anthropic's Opus 5.5 table of 22 September 2026 has no SWE-bench, GPQA, MMLU or ARC-AGI row.[12][12] Introducing Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic Vendor OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra table of 3 September drops SWE-bench Verified.[14][14] GPT-6 Astra benchmarks explained Vellum Secondary[50][50] Why we no longer evaluate SWE-bench Verified OpenAI Vendor Anthropic now writes that "benchmark margins have become a less reliable guide to real-world differences".[12][12] Introducing Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic Vendor

Flawed benchmarks still appear in the fine print. Anthropic's Opus 5.5 system card reports SWE-bench Pro at 89.9%, although Epoch rates it Flawed.[38][38] Claude Opus 5.5 system card Anthropic Vendor Labs also report eval-gaming metrics next to capability rows. Several risks still have no good public benchmark

Some of the risks that matter most to deployers have no public benchmark. Most parts needed to build one already exist.

No public benchmark tests EU conduct law in regulated sectors. We found none, in any language, for MiFID II suitability, IDD, the Consumer Credit Directive or the UCPD.[18][18] Paper notes on EU-Agent-Bench Secondary[19][19] AIReg-Bench, arXiv 2510.01474 Primary Reviewers of EU-Agent-Bench also note missing tax, labour and financial rules.[18][18] Paper notes on EU-Agent-Bench Secondary Claims benchmarks score adjudication, not claimant communication or complaint handling.[104][104] InsClaimBench, arXiv 2610.09671 Primary[103][103] UNDERWRITE, arXiv 2602.00456 Primary

Single-turn tests overstate how well an agent holds a rule over a whole case. On CRMArena-Pro, agent success fell from about 58% in single-turn tasks to about 35% in multi-turn tasks.[182][182] CRMArena-Pro, arXiv 2505.18878 Primary Agents also showed "near-zero inherent confidentiality awareness". UNDERWRITE saw reliability across repeated runs drop by 20%.[103][103] UNDERWRITE, arXiv 2602.00456 Primary

Other gaps cover loss of control, long horizons and graders. Public benchmarks give zero coverage to oversight evasion, self-replication and autonomous AI development.[85][85] Bench-2-CoP, arXiv 2508.05464 Primary METR's suite cannot measure beyond about 16 hours.[11][11] Time horizons page METR Primary Realistic tasks still lack robust graders, as the OSWorld 2.1 audit shows.[8][8] OSWorld 2.1 review Epoch AI Primary Most statute-anchored and safety benchmarks depend on small, unfunded teams.[87][87] EU-Agent-Bench repository GitHub Primary[84][84] COMPL-AI board Hugging Face API Primary

The next frontier benchmark already has a clear shape. Paid experts write new tasks, and part of each version stays private. Agents work with real tools over hours or days. Verifiers or partial credit score the work, and a third party audits the tasks. Reports give cost per task and standard errors.

The credibility risks are well documented. They include test awareness, reward hacking, judge bias, self-reported leaderboards and stale maintenance.[136][136] Anti-scheming, arXiv 2509.15541 OpenAI and Apollo Primary[65][65] Recent reward hacking METR Primary[112][112] MedHELM, arXiv 2505.23802 Primary[119][119] HarmBench repository GitHub Primary Public judge agreement, private test sets and independent re-runs would fix most of them.

CRMArena-Pro shows why multi-turn matters. Agent success fell from about 58% in single-turn tasks to about 35% in multi-turn tasks.[182][182] CRMArena-Pro, arXiv 2505.18878 Primary Agents also showed "near-zero inherent confidentiality awareness".[182][182] CRMArena-Pro, arXiv 2505.18878 Primary UNDERWRITE saw reliability across repeated runs drop by 20%.[103][103] UNDERWRITE, arXiv 2602.00456 Primary A single-turn test therefore overstates how well an agent holds the law over a whole case.
